The French Revolution and America Today …

The French Revolution had two things in common with America today. One, there was a resentment toward the wealthy and two; at the time there were tremendous changes and discoveries in science and technology. By 1789 the peasants had been miserable for ages and there was a lot of jealousy over the upper classes and their privileged lifestyle. French Philosophers fanned those flames. Historians say the French Revolution was expected because discontent was brewing for ages and there were advancements in science and technology that some French leaders were unwilling to embrace. “The Republic has no need of scientists,” the vice president of the revolutionary court is quoted with saying.

America is moving swiftly into an era of new science and technology, leaving many traditional industries obsolete. It may seem like it has happened overnight but cutting-edge discoveries have been anticipated for a long time. Personally I’ve been enjoying the new technologies but not all of them.  I don’t appreciate strange scientific manipulations of nature. I hope American scientists and inventors take the time to slow down and think not about their own financial gain but about what’s good for humanity.

Breton, Brittany, Britain … What Gives?

When one is trying to understand history, countries and geography, especially not one’s native land, it’s confusing as is the case with Breton, Brittany and Britain. Who, what, when and where did you say it is? Briton (or Breton) is the name of one of the tribes who invaded Britain before the Anglo-Saxons (Anglo means English). Britania originally referred to Great Britain especially the southern section but today British territory covers large sections and is known as the United Kingdom. But Brittany (Bretagne) is the old providence of Northwest France and its ancient territory lies in the area now known as Normandy. It gets confusing because, like me, you may picture England when you hear Brittany. Their histories are related but through out the ages, territories are gained and lost. Today, the area known as Brittany belongs to France.

Britain’s William the Warrior

William the Conqueror was quite proud of his successful invasion of England in 1066. Upon the hillside where England’s King Harold was defeated and died, William began making plans to build “Battle Abbey” and dedicate it to Saint Martin. The Latin

William the Conqueror’s Pre-Fab Castle

When Duke William of Normandy invaded England in 1066 he was well prepared, not just with military might, ships, sailors and archers, but with a pre-fab castle. The clever invader brought fitted and framed timbers and barrels full of pegs in which to piece them together. William had this castle fortification erected expediently, helping him to win the Battle of Hastings.

William the Conqueror Fell Precariously When He Invaded England

Yes, in the morning of Sept 28th, 1066, William, the Duke of Normandy must have looked weak when he fell in the ground in front of his fighting men but he made a nice save when he said, “The earth of England is in my two hands.” William was the first of the Norman invaders to step foot on the English sand but what followed was hundreds of ships, knights on horses, archers and over 8,000 soldiers. The rest is history. One of the most common expressions I see and hear during genealogical research is, “I’m related to William the Conqueror.”

Where Did the Name Israel Come From?

The Biblical figure Abraham was the patriarch of the Israelites. His grandson Jacob became prosperous and ruled over a portion of Canaan territory around 1800 B.C.E. The name of the God of the Israelites was “El Shaddai” or “El”. Jacob renamed himself “strength with God”, which in ancient Hebrew is “isra-El”. It must be understood that Jacob is the same person as Israel, which was possibly what he wished to convey all those years ago, a oneness with God and the land. To this day, millions of people have the first name and surname of Jacob, which might be testament to the man so long ago that with gratitude to God and the land named himself Israel.

Ellis Island Turned Away Those They Deemed “Imperfect”

Ellis Island was a group of wooden buildings on a New York island used for funneling massive amounts of immigrants into America. Funded by the US Federal government, after 1892 the former gunpowder station became the place where immigrants arriving to America were registered first before being admitted into the country. Those with physical and mental imperfections were turned away as well as those with lifestyles deemed undesirable such as, prostitutes, polygamists and anarchists. Many immigrants who had emptied their life savings into the voyage were devastated and destitute after being rejected by the American bureaucracy at Ellis Island.
