What Was Saint Anthony’s Fire?

Intense burning pains in the extremities that become gangrenous, poor Saint Anthony, he had “ergotism”, caused by the fungus “ergot” that grows on rye grain. Dangerous as it was, alkaloids present in the ergot fungus produced psychoactive attributes, which the ancients are said to have dappled in, including rumors that Jesus gleaned rye fields just for this purpose. But poor European peasants who consumed ergot fungus infected rye, they too fell victim to the devastating effects of Saint Anthony’s Fire.
