A soldier who takes pay for his service from any who need him is considered a mercenary. Instead of a soldier going to war out of patriotism or loyalty to a country or crown, a mercenary does it for employment. In Colonial America, many mercenaries later took to pirating which is often the case because mercenary soldiers are not particularly loyal to those who hire them. When the Roman Empire fell, one of the contributing factors was the employment of barbarian troops.
