Genealogy: Dishonest Ancestors… It’s Up to Us to Uncover the Truth

I grew up with a sense of not knowing my origins. Now why was that? You would think that if there were nothing to hide I would know. And if you haven’t noticed, there are many Americans who don’t really know where their ancestors hailed from, which is why genealogy is so popular in this country. Who are we?

Take my maiden name for example, Wroten. It’s an unusual name but was never spoken as being a Jewish surname. Once I saw “Rotin” listed as an ancient Sephardic name, of course I began researching in a different direction, one not mired in the illusions of fairy tale knights and English Royalty. And I don’t see “English” ancestry the same way either. So what if our ancestors were in England before they came to America, and so what if they were a knight or held some other noble title, they could still have come from Hebrew ancestry. Plenty disguised their identity before going to England.

  1. Ms. Ocean – I have been doing genealogy for almost 40 years, belong to a bunch of lineage societies, been Registrar for several, etc., etc., and I am now reading your Secret Genealogies Vol. II…at first I thought you were a total nut case, were tying together many things that I thought total coincidences, but the more I read, the more I looked, the more I now realize that I probably have a whole cluster of families in New Amsterdam – Vredenburch, Rosekrans, Roosa, Symens, that all were most likely crypto Jewish families that intermarried. My own surname, Oosterhoudt, descends from our immigrant, Jan Janszen van Oosterhou(d)t, who was mainly called “de Brabander” rather than “van Oosterhou(d)t, because we now think that he only came from the town of Oosterhout in South Brabant in Holland, but no records exist AT ALL of him in any shipping manifest from any European port – thus, his real surname, for all we know could be Rabinowitz. Moreover, I have in recent years discovered MANY Huguenot lines, from both the Flanders and Dutch areas as well as the New Rochelle and Provençal area, which also could have been either Sephardic or Ashkenazi…I have you to thank for sending me in this complete new direction, as I have always thought my ancestry very whitebread, Wasp-y with little of interest other than its basic Rev. War/War of 1812/Colonial Wars/Huguenots/etc….thanks!!! I am now signed up with…what a great website!
