Hitler… the Fear of Others Brings a Small Man Down

It’s ironic that the fear of others helped to bring about Hitler’s end. After a group of Nazi officers, who’d decided they’d had enough, conspired but failed to assassinate him, their attempt helped shatter Hitler’s nerves. Already frayed from the war and his use of health-damaging drugs, Hitler became more and more paranoid. For a man who went to prison years earlier for trying to seize the German government, he knew firsthand how conspiracies work. He was right to be fearful, the Allies were coming for him. With that fear in mind, he committed suicide the night before Germany surrendered. Suellen Ocean is the author of The Steinberg Conspiracy Series. Available here:

What’s the History Behind the Derogatory Term… CRACKER?

It’s an awkward feeling when we hear a derogatory term and know it’s offensive but don’t know the how or why of it. There sure are a lot of offense terms around these days, no ethnic group is spared.

I remember the first time I heard the term cracker. I thought it was because some people have skin the color of white crackers. I was wrong. I’ve stumbled upon two versions of the origins. One is that cracker originated in the Southern states, when white cattlemen carried long leather whips to keep their Longhorn cattle in line. The cracking of the whip, hence… cracker. The state of Georgia has been referred to as the Cracker State. The origins of that stem from an old English word for “a noisy, boasting fellow.” Back when this term was coined, it was believed to have been a fitting description for Georgia’s “backwoodsman.”

Nazi Germany Did Not Appreciate Gypsies

When they first encountered Gypsies, Europe is recorded as having an open-heart. That did not last and the story of Gypsy persecution continues today. After being accused of fraudulent activity, the Gypsies were no longer welcome in Europe and driven to wander. And wander they did. Throughout the world. By the 1700s, every European country had laws against them. Eventually, most modern European laws against the Gypsies were repealed. But not by Nazi Germany. They took their distaste for the Gypsies to the extreme. They put them in labor camps, sterilized them and even exterminated them.

Why Does President Trump Always Have a Suntan?

It’s something that everyone asks. Why does President Trump always have a suntan? And why does it have that orange hue? The answer seems obvious. That’s the color artificial tan lotion takes on once it’s applied to the skin.

Make-up is nothing new. During the 1700s, people put white powder on their hair to color it. And charcoal has been used for ages around the eyes. But… it was while I was reading, “The Day the Bubble Burst: A Social History of the Wall Street Crash of 1929,” by Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts, that I understood President Trump’s reasoning. One of the people in the story wondered why the “Berlin Börsen-maklers were deeply suntanned.” It was this line that fit so well with Trump’s self-image. “… a suntan was a mark of affluence.”

American Born Spaniards… Creoles… Should Have Received More Respect

Spanish King Ferdinand made some bad choices. In his realm as master of the kingdom, he was quite cruel. He instituted the Inquisition, and followed through on his plan to make Spain a Catholic country, leading to the death or banishment of thousands of innocent subjects who refused to submit. But when Spain had colonies in the New World, his choices were also harsh. Ferdinand expected his New World subjects to trade only with Spain. That didn’t go over well. We have the history of pirates and smuggling to prove that. Those whose parents were born in Spain but they themselves were born in the New World were referred to as Creoles and they did not receive the respect they deserved. Laws that allowed only Spanish born subjects to hold higher offices in the government and within the Church brought discontent. Revolts of all varieties in the New World grew so strong, Spain was unable to control the colonies and eventually lost them.
