I Ask Again… What’s an Aristocrat? A Snob?

I’ve blogged about this before but obviously didn’t get enough of it. What’s an aristocrat? The answer is: snobbish. No really, that’s one of the definitions of aristocratic, that and socially exclusive. To be aristocratic means that you partake of, or are characteristic of a ruling or privileged class, a patrician. Now we ask, what’s a patrician, and that would be a person of high birth or breeding. An aristocracy is a government ruled by this smaller group of the “privileged class,” even though history has shown us, these people of “high birth or breeding” aren’t always the sharpest knife in the drawer. Unfortunately, an aristocratic position of wealth and connections often places undesirable candidates into governing positions. I’m pretty sure I’ll blog about this again because… I find it hard to believe.  Suellen Ocean is the author of the historical series, The Lion’s Trace Available here:

What is a Plutocrat?

Plutocracy means government by the wealthy. A Plutocrat is a member of the Plutocracy, the government controlled by wealthy rulers, “a controlling class of rich men”. Today, we must add “women”, due to the power they have achieved. A plutocrat is one who has power or influence, due to his or her wealth. History: What is Nepotism?

Oh how I’ve heard that word tossed about. Nepotism is showing favoritism to relatives. In the workplace it refers to giving jobs to your family members. In the not too distant past people would help their family members find jobs, frequently in government positions. Any quick scan of your local list of government employees may show large numbers of the same last name. That could be because it’s a popular name in the community but it could also mean that before rules were stricter, family members were able to help relatives land a position. Today, more changes have been made and it’s not unusual on a job application to have to answer the question: Do any of your family members work here?
