Was Hitler Close With the German People?

The answer is no. Hitler was not close with the German people but he made it look like he was with propaganda photos. Hitler liked to pose with picturesque peasants and schoolchildren but it was not a genuine reflection of who he was. He didn’t particularly like children. However, perhaps propaganda photos do not lie when Hitler is shown schmoozing with his officers. He was quite pleased with the destruction he wrought on the world. Genealogy… Americans With English Ancestry… It’s Not that Simple

Some people think that having English ancestry is simple. Their ancestors were English… end of subject. Not quite. England was settled by people coming from many different regions. About 5,500 years ago, the first farmers went to England by boat from the main European continent. These early European farmers brought wheat, flax, barley, and the typical farm animals you see today, goats, pigs, sheep and cattle. Evolved from hunter-gatherers, these new farmers brought pastoral living to Britain. Because they no longer wondered in search of food, they developed communities and began the evolution toward making metal tools. First of copper, later bronze and eventually iron. Today, as more people have DNA testing, they are discovering the origins of these ancient English ancestors. Suellen Ocean is the author of the historic novel The Celtic Prince Available here:

World War II… What Was the French Underground?

It wasn’t easy for the French when the Nazis rolled into Paris but thanks to the rebelliousness of the French Resistance movement, also known as the French Underground, Paris was eventually liberated. The world owes great respect to the strong fighting spirits of both French men and women who laid explosives on the rail lines to thwart the Nazis, sent cryptic messages and gave ground support and surveillance to the Allies when they came ashore at Normandy. The members of the French Resistance were able to hide out in the forest while they conspired against the German occupation but when these Resistance fighters worked covert operations in populated areas, they took even greater risks and some paid with their lives. Imagine the fear when they rubbed shoulders with Nazi soldiers. The world would be a different place today if not for the bold actions of the French Resistance.  Suellen Ocean is the author of the World War II inspired novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

History… A Bit About the Renaissance

If someone mentions the Renaissance, of course I understand what they’re talking about… who doesn’t? But I followed up a little bit so that I truly understood the depth of this medieval era and found it was a fascinating period in history. The forerunner of this movement was a man named Francesco Petrarca who lived from 1304-74. Renaissance is taken from the French word renaitre, which means to be born again. It was a time period when people began to appreciate ancient culture, particularly that of Rome and Greece.

World War II War Lords… Did Hitler Smoke?

There were four major warlords of World War II; Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin and of course… Adolph Hitler. Long before the war broke out, a way of life that advocated living naturally and keeping the body pure was taking shape in Germany. It was especially popular with philosophical Nazis. Hitler neither smoked nor drank alcohol and strongly detested it. When in his company, smokers and drinkers were forbidden to engage in either. The other warlords were smokers. America’s President Roosevelt smoked cigarettes, the Soviet Union’s Stalin smoked cigarettes and Great Britain’s Winston Churchill is famous for chewing on a cigar.  Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Genealogy… Do You Really Want to Find Your Ancestors?

Genealogy takes a lot of time but because it’s rewarding, it’s a popular pastime. No one wants to spin their wheels though, and believe me, I’ve done a lot of that. Over the years, I’ve grown to realize how important it is to study the area that our ancestors called home. That may sound like a given, but it’s easy to overlook territories our families passed through or settled in.

Because today, so many people have dug into their family trees, there’s a strong likelihood that others looking for the same ancestors have done the work for us. But there’s always more to learn and knowing the history of the region they came from will enrich your genealogical experience. It can be especially enriching if you don’t know who your ancestors were but only where they came from. Take for example, Native American ancestry. Do you know through oral history that great-grandma was a Shawnee but you have no idea what her name was? Study the history and traditions of the Shawnee. Find something similar about the culture that may have been handed down through the generations. I like to believe that if we listen carefully, our ancestors will hear our calling and we will feel their spirit.  Suellen Ocean is the author of Secret Genealogy IV – Native Americans Hidden in Our Family Trees.
