The First Stock Exchange

Back in the 1500s the Dutch had the VOC – Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (United East India Company). I believe this was the first stock “exchange”. Investors would get together, and commission ships to voyage and bring back spices, cloth, herring, wheat, etc. The VOC was where you went to purchase your “share” in it. If pirates didn’t get your ship or storms didn’t ruin your wheat, you made a profit. This built the great Golden era of Amsterdam.

And what about Wall Street? This street received its name because it was built in 1653 to protect the colonists of New Amsterdam from the Lenape Native Americans and the British.

Who Says Royalty Has It Easy?

Bohemian Queen Elizabeth had thirteen children. Even though she had attendants she still had to give birth thirteen times which can’t be easy even with all that help. Imagine keeping track of that brood? And can you only imagine the drama? No, we don’t have to imagine it these days; the tabloids spell it out for us, much to the cringing of the Royals who lose any semblance of privacy.

Bohemian Queen Elizabeth’s children’s’ uncle was Charles I, whom the Queen’s two sons fought a war for. Her second to the last child was Sophia. Sophia had a child whom she named George, who became King. I’ll call Bohemian Queen Elizabeth’s children, her lucky thirteen, because during the 1600’s many babies did not make it safely into this world. It must have been difficult, perhaps impossible during the Middle Ages for her to keep them safe.

Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of King James I. In 1613, after Elizabeth married Frederick V, this Bohemian couple lived in Frederick’s capital of Heidelberg, Germany. In 1618, Frederick became King of Bohemia. The Thirty Years War began in the same year. In 1619, Elizabeth and Frederick were crowned King and Queen at Prague. But the Bohemian Royal couple had to escape. The Queen made it safely to Holland and became friends with Maurice of Orange. In 1661 Elizabeth went to England, residing in London until her death in 1662 at about the age of sixty-six.

The Princess Saw Secret State Papers at a Young Age

Elizabeth II was the presumed heir to the throne as a child so was carefully coached, including being shown secret state papers when she was appointed a councilor of state when she was only eighteen. At an even younger age, sixteen, she held the position of colonel of the Grenadier Guards (an honorary position) and at the same time became a Sea Ranger. At eleven, Princess Elizabeth was a Girl Guide. She is said to have lived a simple life, having time to pursue her interest in horses and music. When her father, the King died, Elizabeth was in Kenya with her husband Philip. Upon news of her father’s death she hurried home to London where she was immediately proclaimed as Queen Elizabeth II. The date of the King’s death was February 1952 but Elizabeth did not have her crowning until over a year later, in June of 1953 at Westminster Abbey.

An Open Letter to Johnny Depp

Dear Johnny,

The world has embraced you as theirs. You step outside the boundaries of mortality with the relaxed, carefree way in which you approach your craft. But at the same time, in your real life (if the world has allowed you to have one) you speak up against injustices. So it is perfectly reasonable that I should want you to play Celtic Prince Jonathan in my historical fiction movie, The Celtic Prince. This golden-torched young man Jonathan is the son of a liaison between the king and his mistress (an excellent castle cook). Mentored by a medieval Knights Templar who takes refuge in the castle, the boy grows up within the castle kitchen, tagging along occasionally when his parents commit indiscreet liaisons behind the Queen’s back. Since no Johnny Depp movie is without a love interest, the grown Celtic Prince Jonathan has a torrid love affair with the daughter of one of Europe’s established secret society families.

A film with a glimpse of the historic druids is in your future, so give a shout out Johnny when you’re ready to don a golden torque and kilt, and portray the colorful, meaningful role of Celtic Prince Jonathan.

Sincerely,

Suellen Ocean
