What’s Queen Elizabeth’s Relation to the Boelyn Sisters?

I must admit that I saw the movie about the Boelyn Sisters and I was confused. Henry VIII had so many wives, how are we expected to sort it all out, especially when you throw in his sister, Mary Queen of Scots, into the story? Let’s forget Mary for now, she was the king’s daughter who got married off to the king of Scotland, she and Henry VIII were brother and sister. King Henry VIII was married six times, his daughter; Elizabeth was the daughter he had with Anne Boleyn. Today’s Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, his sons Prince Harry and Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Windsor and their new baby George are the descendants of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

Genealogy: Dishonest Ancestors… It’s Up to Us to Uncover the Truth

I grew up with a sense of not knowing my origins. Now why was that? You would think that if there were nothing to hide I would know. And if you haven’t noticed, there are many Americans who don’t really know where their ancestors hailed from, which is why genealogy is so popular in this country. Who are we?

Take my maiden name for example, Wroten. It’s an unusual name but was never spoken as being a Jewish surname. Once I saw “Rotin” listed as an ancient Sephardic name, of course I began researching in a different direction, one not mired in the illusions of fairy tale knights and English Royalty. And I don’t see “English” ancestry the same way either. So what if our ancestors were in England before they came to America, and so what if they were a knight or held some other noble title, they could still have come from Hebrew ancestry. Plenty disguised their identity before going to England.

Kennedy: What Does Camelot Mean?

Good question. When I hear news stories about John F. Kennedy and his family, they are often referred to as “Camelot.” But “Camelot” is taken from Arthurian legend. King Arthur’s legendary palace is named “Camelot” and was placed in Southwest England. Camelot is where King Arthur held court and had his “Round Table” that all the Knights sat around.

I believe President Kennedy’s wife, Jackie Kennedy, was the one who began using Camelot in relation to the Kennedy’s and those around them.

What Does Church of England Mean?

Without going into King Henry VIII’s desire to have his marriage annulled, which the Pope would not consent to, we’ll skip to the political maneuvering the jolly king did to get his way. The king cut off English tithes to the Pope and ruled that church disputes would be taken up in England’s courts not in Rome. New laws ruled that King Henry VIII (not the Pope) would choose England’s bishops and the Pope would no longer be head of England’s Church. The king would fill the supreme position. Today, what was formerly England’s Catholic Church is the Church of England. The English people were more than happy to have their churches fall out of power of foreign rule.

OMG… Protestant Protestors

I had absolutely no idea that protestant came from the word protest. I’ve heard the word all my life and never thought to ask what it meant. As a child it meant… “not Catholic.” That was good enough for me. Not that Catholic was a bad thing, my best friend was a Catholic and I thank my protestant parents for letting me go to church with her. I went so many times, I know a little bit about what it feels like to be Catholic. During the medieval era, the word protestant came about because some Roman Catholics protested certain things about Catholicism. They became Protestants and are known as such today.

History: What’s With the “York” in “New York?”

Once upon a time… there were two English families constantly at war with one another. These noble families were the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The English people were sick and tired of it. Finally, a twenty-eight-year-old member of the House of Lancaster, Henry Tudor, married the daughter of Edward IV. Thus, Henry Tudor reined as Henry VII. While he reined from 1485-1509, there was an absence of war with other countries and England’s energy was spent exploring the New World, science and the arts. That was the House of Lancaster.

The role the House of York plays in America’s world famous city comes to us through King Charles II and his land grant to James, the Duke of York. The land grant ran between the Connecticut and Delaware Rivers.

England’s Multi-Ethnic Royal Family

Looking into the tree of England’s Royal Family, you’ll see a European mix of ancestry and some Middle Eastern too. If you look carefully at one of Queen Elizabeth’s crowns, you’ll see the Maltese cross, symbolizing England’s historic ties to Germany. The Viking/Norwegian ancestry comes from William the Conqueror who invaded England back in 1066 and a pretty French girl may also play a part in this story.

Moving ahead in history, Henry VII hoped to bring Scottish ties to the family, so married his daughter Margaret, to the King of Scotland. Margaret is famously known as Mary Queen of Scots. This same Henry married his son Arthur to the Princess of Spain, Catherine of Aragon. There appear to be Jewish ties too, though they go back further into ancient history. I think it’s fair to say that like most of us, England’s Royal Family is multi-ethnic.

African American or Caucasian… Slaves May Provide Genealogical Clues

We know the story but can’t quite place our ancestors as characters in the big picture, as much as we are longing to. I couldn’t help notice though, that the pattern in which housekeeping slaves were kept in Colonial America, resembles that of ancient New Christians.

Fifty years after the Inquisition (1540), there’s record of New Christians emigrating from Portugal to England and having household slaves. (A New Christian was the title given to Jews who converted to Christianity.) If these English New Christians came from Portugal, where it was common to have household slaves, they may have continued this practice in England and obtained them through their Portuguese connections.

Around 1625, England set up enterprises in the Caribbean but still very few African slaves resided in the Atlantic colonies. Indentured Servants (usually Caucasian) were the norm. By 1626, with the help of Portuguese New Christians, the Dutch West India Company began supplying slaves to the early colonists. In 1664, the English captured New Amsterdam and renamed it New York.

 

Recognizing that your Colonial ancestors had “housekeeping slaves”, or were themselves “housekeeping slaves” could be a clue they descended from New Christians who came from England, having previously emigrated from Portugal. The clue here is the household slaves. Who Provided the Household Slaves? Family? Business Associates? Old Testament Hebrew names give the story more depth. Names like Moses and Samuel paint a little more of the picture. Watch for any hint of Spanish or Portuguese sounding names.

Ancient History: Why Was Mistletoe Sacred to the Druids?

Mistletoe is a part of the Christmas celebration. It’s a carry-over from the ancient Druids who lived in sacred oak groves. What was so special about it? I really don’t know. All I know is when I see mistletoe hanging over the door I’m very careful who I’m standing with as tradition has it you’re suppossed to kiss the person you find yourself standing under it with. My favorite herb book, “back to eden” by Jethro Kloss, has the medicinal properties of mistletoe listed as “narcotic, antispasmodic, emetic, tonic, nervine.” It’s also stated to be “effective in epilepsy, convulsions, hysteria, delirium, nervous debility, and heart troubles.” Honestly, I thought it was poisonous. I’d look into it a little more before I consumed it. It is worth looking into. Perhaps the wise Druids were onto something a bit more than an occasional holiday smooch.

Ancient History: Celts… Gauls… Ancient Britons

Celtic history can be all over the place. We like to have a name for everybody and everything. How can you explain a “people” if you don’t have a title for them? For example, we have the words Celtic and Briton. When Caesar went north to the remote section of the island we now call England, the people who lived in the massive forests and meadows became known as Brythons or Britons, a Celtic tribe. But so were the Gaels, who rumor has it, the Britons drove north to Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Separated by the massive forests and swampland, the Britons and Gaels are believed to have fought, much the same way several tribes of Native Americans had their differences. Through the ages, these Celtic tribes continued their feuds, both their histories tell of great toll taken because of their continued differences.
