Ancient Engineers 5,500 Years Ago

Can you believe that over 5,500 years ago there were ancient engineers who were much more skilled at math than some of us today? The irrigation systems of the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians were constructed using geometry. They also used their knowledge of math and geometry to solve problems of astronomy. By 2,900 B.C.E. the Egyptians used their knowledge of math and geometry to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. By 300 B.C.E. there was a renowned university in Alexandria (Egypt) complete with famous math instructors. Alexandria was (and still is) located along the Mediterranean Sea, talk about a nice college campus.

Veterans Day, Soldiers Today, Soldiers Tomorrow …

On this Veterans Day, I’d like to share a WWII era newspaper article, author unknown:

As days of battle passed into more of the same thing, a sense of fatalistic resignation came to many men; a feeling that death was simply an unlucky chance of happening to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. We all knew men who seemed convinced they would not come through – and didn’t. It is hard to look at this portrait of Solon Lindsey, (Co. “I”), with its tense, determined seriousness of expression, and not believe he realized this might be his last picture. It was; a few days later, when the bombs fell at Baggazzano in the Po valley, Solon was among those caught in the “wrong place at the wrong time,” and a grand man died.

Thanksgiving – Indian Chief Massasoit Was Friendly But It Didn’t End Well

Living in the Southland of what we know now as Massachusetts, an Indian Chief born in 1580, “Massasoit” was friendly and shared food with the Pilgrims, thus beginning America’s first Thanksgiving. This amicable relationship lasted about fifty years until Massasoit’s death in 1661. After this date, one of the Chief’s sons began a bloody war against the Pilgrims.

Genealogy Is Like Fortune-Telling, Only Backwards

If you think about it, Genealogy is like fortune telling except that it goes backwards into time. That’s what it reminds me of. There is nothing like the excitement we experience when we open wide the lives of those who lived before us. Did their babies make it through the first year? Was anyone ever arrested or hung for treason? Did they save their land through the Great Panic or the Great Depression? And sometimes there are real doozies we find out about our ancestors; occasionally they do very human and sometimes bad things like abandon their families or take part in slave holding. Sometimes we find that they were the benefactors of others and kept it a secret and sometimes we find that they kept their religion or ethnicity a secret. It’s rather odd, this fascination we have about those who are no longer with us but millions of people do and genealogy searching gains strength in popularity each day. It is an addicting yet wonderful pastime watching your own novel unfold and it is a way in which we can leave a legacy for our descendants.

What is a Banker’s Mark???

A Banker’s mark is a unique symbol passed from father to son, especially during the Middle Ages and affixed upon their work. Sometimes the mark was a geometrical design sometimes it was heraldic. A Banker’s mark is sometimes seen as synonymous with Mason’s mark, the designs that ancient masons cut into pyramids, castles, churches, etc. as either a symbol of their affiliations with secret brotherhoods or just a mason signing his work in order to receive payment or to guide in stone layout.

Mason’s Marks. Just a signature or Cryptic Signs?

Around the world little heiroglypic, cryptic-type drawings are found cut into stone. The exact same symbols are found in a chamber of the Great Pyramid as also appear upon the wall at Saint Mary’s Church, Saint Mary de Castro (Saint Mary of the Castle) an ancient church standing in the vicinity of Leicester Castle in England.

Did the ancient Masons sign their work as a precursor to the modern “brand name” like the Nike symbol on today’s shoes? Or were they meant to leave a trail to follow as the quilts that held cryptic messages for escaped slaves along the underground railroad?

Who Was Mary Magdalene???

First let’s separate Mary from Magdalene. Magdalene refers to Magdala, a location on the Sea of Galilee. So it’s Mary of Magdala. Who was this very special Mary? She is the woman who was at the crucifixion of Jesus AND the one who reported she saw him after the Resurrection. Mary of Magdala is also written about in the New Testament of the Bible for the evil spirits drawn from her and also for tending to the needs of Jesus.

America’s White Sandy Beaches in 1003

Over a thousand years ago, a Northman wrote of woodlands with long, white, sandy beaches he had “discovered” in North America. “Mark” is the Norse word for wood and so the discoverer, Thorfinn Karlsefni gave the area the name of ‘Markland”. Scholars debate the location of this and many other claims of early explorations, especially the mysteries of the Knights Templars but some suggest Northman Karlsefni may have landed on the shores of Newfoundland.

It must have been scandalous. Marguerite, Queen of France was about nineteen when she married Henry IV and after twenty-seven years of marriage, divorced. As the daughter of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici, she was cultured, beautiful and the author of memoirs and poems. Known to have had several lovers, this Queen was quite the romantic.

London’s Medieval Trading Companies

During the middle ages, ambitious people from around the civilized European world gravitated toward the wharfs of the River Thames. After gathering in the streets to discuss their latest profits and losses they began creating organizations … guilds. The new guilds had to fight mightily to gain prosperity because the burghers in power were often relatives of industrial tycoons. But as the years went by the guilds grew stronger economically and politically, thus many members of the guilds became the new wealthy class. By the 1500s, London’s guilds became highly prosperous and are today still functioning but under different company names.
